Replied to the topic CPD and professional development
Sophie’s preference for practical workshops raises a useful question: how much individual feedback will you actually get? Before booking, it’s worth asking about group size, hands-on practice time and whether tutors watch and correct your technique. Separately, check whether it counts towards your p...

Replied to the topic Self-employed and working alone? Tell us one thing you wish you'd known sooner
For me it's how much of the job isn't the massage. In the clinic I turned up, treated and went home. Now it's bookings, reminders, laundry, receipts and chasing the odd payment, and that adds up to more hours than I expected. What I wish I'd done from day one is set aside a fixed hour each week for a...

Replied to the topic What are you charging in 2026?
I'm in SW London and rent a room by the session rather than monthly. When I first set my prices I only thought about what other therapists charged. Took me a while to realise the room fee, towels and quiet midweek slots eat more than I expected.
For a 60-minute massage I'm at £75–£85 depe...

Replied to the topic CPD and professional development
I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I work as a massage therapist at one of London's leading spas and I'm looking at deepening my deep tissue and myofascial work, and maybe some part-time independent clients alongside spa work later on. The hard part isn't finding courses. It's knowing whi...

Replied to the topic Free massage price calculator: are you charging enough?
I've been putting off working this out properly, so the calculator came at a good time. At the spa the rates are set for us, but if I go part-time self-employed I'm wary of picking a number that "sounds right" for central London and then finding room hire, insurance and quiet slots wipe half of it o...

Created the topic CPD and professional development in Techniques and CPD
With so many massage courses, workshops and online training options available, it's not always easy to decide what's worth investing in.
We've already had some interesting discussions about deep tissue techniques, myofascial release and advanced massage training.
But there's another side to CPD ...

Created the topic Insurance, licences and client records: is your paperwork up to date? in Insurance, qualifications and licensing
Something that doesn't get discussed enough is the paperwork therapists need to keep on top of, particularly when working independently.
Insurance is one thing, but there are also consultation forms, treatment records, qualifications and, depending on the treatments and borough, local licensing re...

Created the topic Room hire in London: what are therapists actually paying? in Jobs and room rentals
We've had a few discussions about the cost of working independently, and treatment room rental seems to be one of the biggest expenses.
It would be useful to get a better idea of what therapists are actually paying across London.
Are you renting by the hour, booking a room for a full day or payi...

We've just added a free massage price calculator to the website, particularly for therapists who are self-employed or thinking about working independently.

Replied to the topic Which massage courses are actually worth taking?
Hi Maria, I completely agree about not collecting certificates just for their own sake. Some of these courses cost a small fortune, especially when you add up the course fee, travel and time off work!If you're already comfortable with Swedish and deep tissue massage, I'd probably look at myofascial ...

Replied to the topic What did you sign when you rented your room?
When I first started looking at treatment rooms, I was mostly concerned about the location, the cost, and whether it was somewhere my clients would feel comfortable. I didn't pay nearly enough attention to the rental agreement itself. I've since realised how important the little details are. Some ro...

Replied to the topic How do you handle no-shows and late cancellations?
I think it's one of those things where you have to be a bit firm, even if it feels awkward at first. I prefer a 24-hour cancellation policy. Things happen, people get ill, trains are delayed, and I wouldn't want to charge someone who's genuinely had an emergency. But when somebody just doesn't turn ...

I'm a massage therapist working at one of the larger spas in central London. I've been in the industry for a while now and really enjoy the work, although as I'm sure many of you know, spa life can be pretty demanding! I mainly work with Swedish, deep tissue and relaxing massage treatments. Lately I...

Replied to the topic What are you charging in 2026?
I'm currently working at a spa in central London, so the prices are set by management rather than individual therapists. A 60-minute treatment is generally around £90–£110, with 90 minutes costing roughly £130–£160, depending on the treatment.
I'm also considering going part-time self-employed, an...

Replied to the topic Which insurer do you use, and have you ever had to claim?
Thanks for starting this topic, Jessica.
I'd say the biggest mistake is choosing insurance purely on price. You can find fairly cheap policies, but that doesn't necessarily mean they suit the treatments you're offering.
In a spa, the business usually arranges its own insurance, but that doesn't ...
